Highland Destiny

Date read: April 3, 2022 – April 12, 2022

Author: Hannah Howell

Series: Murray Family #1

Back to the highlands I go. This is the start of the Murray brothers. They end up wounded and down the same road as Maldie Kirkaldy and she offered her services as nurse. They discover they share a common goal and enemy, but Maldie can’t reveal her identity nor deny her attraction.

So I’m not coming as your visitor, I’m being commanded to come. It would make your stay more pleasant if you view it as an invitation. I’m not sure I can lie that big to myself. Lol this has a promising start.

But herself was not feeling inclined to listen. lol

I don’t think I enjoyed this one as much as the others by this author. They got together way too early and I’m not sure exactly what else happened besides them getting together. Like all the action was at the beginning and the end. The middle was a bit slow. Overall though I enjoyed reading it and want to know how Nigel fairs in his quest to get over his love for his brothers wife.

Series: Highland Brides #3

The last one of the Highland Brides series. Ailis is the heir of her clan and a prize to be bartered by her father. She gets abducted by her clan’s worst enemy, Alexander. Oh not sweet widowed Alex. The rest of that description doesn’t make sense. So I’ll just get started.

I’m confused as to where this falls in the timeline of the other books. I thought it would be after but I’m pretty sure in the others he was a widow and had a daughter which doesn’t seem to be the case.

Lol. You have to go save the wee puppies.

So is she like pregnant now? They’ve been sharing a bed for six weeks and haven’t mentioned her period at all. Does she realize that she’s most likely pregnant.

Good grief. How long have they been there? They shared a bed for six weeks. She stayed out of his bed for a month. Now they’ve shared a bed for another ten weeks. She’s just lucky she didn’t get pregnant sooner.

Go Ailis. She totally just punched him in the face. That was awesome. He deserved it though. That was totally rude.

I’m not sure we can get much worse off than we currently are right now. Ailis is currently hiding in the wall of Malcom’s home, Donald is there visiting, Jaime is with her and is terrified of small dark spaces, oh and she’s giving birth right now. It gets worse, in exchange for his help she’s given Malcom one night with her, so she’s gonna lose Alexander (they’re gonna find a way around it but still). Oh and she just said she hopes Alex’s child has the good sense to know they are surrounded by danger and keeps his mouth shut when he’s born.

I liked the others in this series better. I would have liked him to see his friends while he was figuring out he was in love or at least introduced them to his girl after they got through everything. It was still a good read though. Anyway back to the book I started during lunch yesterday.

Series: Highland Brides #2

I finally got book two of this series. We have Sir Iain who lost his wife. She appears to have been killed by some enemy dude. He’s commanded by Scotland’s king to remarry to unite two powerful clans. Islaen has eleven brothers so little time for romance but longed for more than a forced marriage.

I thought some enemy killed his wife. Now though we are saying she died in childbirth. I’m confused.

Well this is looking bright and chipper. Like all the women want to kill her to get her husband or just seduce him away from her. Then there are the two degenerates that wanted to marry her for her money that are now going to be out to kill him so they can marry her. This is gonna end very well. And we are only on chapter two.

I mean you concealed your boobs for six years what’s concealing your first pregnancy for a few months. This is going to end badly.

Oh yay. She’s pregnant. Now the deception starts. Let’s see how long she can keep this up and who figures it out. Also, she has two guys trying to kill her to get revenge against Iain.

Wait a minute she was for sure pregnant when Fraser kidnapped her. Oh wait I figured it out. The first time he tried to rape her.

Well I liked that. I’m glad he decided that he loved her before they were attacked by the crazy dude.

The Fiery Cross

Date read: November 10, 2019 – July 2, 2021

Author: Diana Gabaldon

Series: Outlander #5

Now that I’ve passed my CPA exams I’m getting back to this series. Also, season five is about to start and I want to read the book before watching it. It’s 1771 and everyone is in the past. The back of the book talks about the war that’s coming (they live in America now). I’m not sure if we’ll actually get to the war but the book is pretty long so who knows.

Well that was depressing. I don’t know if we had met Abel in a previous book, but it’s so sad. He lost his wife because he was trying to gain the coin he needed to pay his taxes. On top of that they had already lost all their children who didn’t even live to a year.

Well that was an emotional roller coaster of a chapter. Frank put the grave stone in the Kirk yard in Scotland. Jaime isn’t actually buried there. Also he knew Jaime survived Culloden, but didn’t tell Claire. Then we talk through some of the rape and Roger’s fears and reluctances around Bree and them getting married. He doesn’t want her to leave him or choose a bairn over him.

I had a crazy thought. If Frank knew when and where Jaime died to put up the gravestone did he also know when Claire will die?

That was epic. I loved that. Jocasta just totally insulted Roger, implying that he was just marrying Bree for her money. So, instead of leaving her estates to Bree, Jocasta decided to leave them to Jemmy, Bree’s son. Also, if anything happened to the child Roger and Bree wouldn’t see a penny. He just told her off that he nor his wife wanted her money and there was no way his son was going to have it. She could shove it. Ha ha ha. That was awesome.

I’m 150 pages in and we are still in the same day we started at. We aren’t even to the weddings that take place that evening. I’m starting to think we may not get very much closer to the revolution at this rate. It’s like she’s got to make up for the book where she skipped twenty years that were really only addressed in flashbacks.

Aww. I think they need to talk to each other. I think if they did she’d be able to climax with him again. Roger also has some hesitations about their relationship too. It would do them good.

Jaime you can’t die. That’s not allowed so you shouldn’t even be talking like you might. Also you know if you die Claire will follow you. And this takes us to the end of part two.

That was a mess. That lady was crazy. Her husband was abusive, but still keeping him somewhat alive so he could die slowly. That’s just awful. Then Jaime put the man down and he and Claire buried him. Jaime also wants to know if his da suffered like that before he died.

Well that was crazy. They ride up to what I hesitate to call a town, and they get shot at, but no one is hit. Roger is bravely trying to figure out what to do. I think he should have the guy marry the local guy’s daughter that he disgraced.

I didn’t see that coming. I thought they would have kept the bairn. Claire said no though when Jaime offered to adopt it for her.

Lordy, no one has noticed that Ally left with Morton. I wonder where they will go and what he’ll do about his other wife? This ended the section so I wonder if we’ll even get to find out her family’s reaction or if we just skip that bit.

Oh I can’t breathe. Lol. She collected his sperm and is looking at it through a microscope. I’m dying.

I’m dying. Jaimes thoughts about his sperm now that he knows what they look like. I can’t right now.

Well that didn’t give me warm fuzzies. I’m not sure about him taking her wedding rings as his stakes in a game of whist.

He didn’t say he went in. I’m not sure her visitor was Jaime, but if he was pacing the hall who could it have been.

Why would anyone kill a slave. I’m not quite sure what’s going on. Also, what is Stephen Bonnet doing at Jocasta’s.

I hate Stephen Bonnet, but that’s gonna have to sit on the side for a bit. Jaime is getting called to war by lord Tryon. Claire is pissed. I love her language.

That’s so eerie. Brianna was singing Loch Lomond and guess what was playing on my Pandora station when I read that? You guessed it Loch Lomond. That’s creepy.

I’m surprised they didn’t tear Roger apart. I’m not sure what Jaime thought to gain by sending Roger over there to get Husband.

Lol Roger what were you thinking kissing her. You should just be glad Bree didn’t find you. She would castrate you.

Is that where turn coat came from? If you were taken prisoner they’d turn your coat inside out meaning you’ve been caught by the enemy. Huh the things you learn.

Claire and Bree are going to kill you if you let Roger die. I mean I’m fairly certain we don’t kill him yet. I think he’s in some of the other books and this isn’t a paranormal series so no rising from the dead.

Ok really no one in the governor’s camp knew Roger and could help him out. He was just hung. Some woman ran to save him, I think Bree but not really sure. I’m pretty sure he didn’t die.

Bree is going to make me cry with her dreams. She doesn’t want anything from her own time. She just wants Roger to be able to talk to her again. Aww.

Aww. I really want Roger to get better soon. He’s breaking my heart with how Bree feels.

We don’t think they’re demons. They live terribly. No self respecting demon would live that way. Lol.

They have quite the pair of horses. Hers freaks out over thunder and lightning and his hates to be behind anyone. What a great combination in this storm.

Poor Judas to die from a lightening strike, but Jaime has another fluke bear kill to his name. I hope Roger finds his way home ok.

Roger made it back home alright. I’m not sure how he did it or if he has the survey stuff done, but he made it home.

This is a lot of Roger chapters. I think I like the Claire chapters better. Although Jaime’s been bit by a snake and is sort of dying right now and their philosophical conversation is kinda funny. Also Roger telling Jaime he isn’t going to die. He knows Bree and Claire wouldn’t forgive him.

Lol Jamie being all gruff and adamant that he’ll live and Claire can’t take his leg even though he’s been bit by a snake. Then while tending him a buffalo appears in their yard and Bree, Marsali and Claire kill it.

Awww is Bree trying to get pregnant again. This time on purpose?

I love their banter. Claire and Jamie are my couple goals. That was super cute. He’s helping her read this passage in Latin and they keep reading each other. It’s just too much, I love it.

You might as well call another boat so we don’t all drown together. Lol poor Jamie and his seasickness.

Aww Ian came back. Isn’t that nice. Or what happened that he came back?

Oh well maybe not as happy. Jamie said he’s back for good but doesn’t have his wife or child with him. That makes me think that they’ve died.

Lol well young Ian has discovered that his auntie Claire isn’t a fairy but a time traveler. He found the journal of another time traveler who may have gone to live with the Mohawk.

Could we have made that any more awkward? Claire was teaching about genetics now we are explaining balls to young Jemmy. I’m about dying of laughter from everyone’s embarrassment.

Ok so that took me a bit to get through but I did enjoy it. It’s just long and a lot happens. I did wish we had a bit more closure with Bonnet. If past is prelude then he might not be dead just castrated or marred in some way and come back again. We discovered that Jemmy can travel through the stones, but Roger and Bree are going to stay and not go back. We are still in the quiet before the storm that is the American revolution. Also we didn’t find out what the deal was about the fire and if Jamie and Claire really die in it or are just suspected to be dead. I guess I’ll have to keep reading the series lol. I didn’t bring it with me on this trip so that’s for later.

His Bonnie Bride

Date read: April 25, 2021 – April 26, 2021

Author: Hannah Howell

Series: Highland Brides #1

I got this one at half price. Our girl is English and lives on the border of Scotland. Raiding and battle was a way of life and there is a code of honor on both sides. She gets taken by the enemy and all her stepmother has to do is pay the ransom. But as days turn to weeks it’s clear no one is fighting fair.

Ok like this is a terrible idea. Yes the men have gone off to battle and left us safely at the castle. Let’s leave the castle pack a picnic and go watch the battle.

Well it was a terrible idea. All the children were captured and will be held for ransom.

Of course Storm is going to be a fiery, strong willed lass. Good thing she’s not of age yet or I get the feeling Tavis would have kept her then. He is planning another visit though in eight or nine years.

Lol. Are you cold? Also known as, I know you aren’t but I’m scared and want to cuddle with you but I’m on the brink of being a man and can’t say such things.

Storm you really need to stop pissing off the women around you. Your stepmother, Janet and now Katherine. You better watch your back.

Oh please tell me that Janet is poisoning the Laird so she can have Tavis. That would be great!

Oh poor Storm. Pregnant and so alone. Although there is a lot of book left I wonder if her stepmother is lying.

I’m so glad her family is alive. That would have been just too tragic.

I really enjoyed this one. I liked her moxie and their chemistry. I think they pushed a bit hard on the not wanting to admit their feelings but they got there. Also, I’m finding that I’m not really a fan of keeping the pregnancy from the father where he doesn’t get to be there during the pregnancy and the birth. If they don’t end up together fine but if they are meant for each other I just feel bad that he’s missing out on that. I would have liked an epilogue of maybe a few years later, but there are two more books in the series so I guess I’ll survive.

His Stolen Bride

Date read: April 24, 2021

Author: Shelly Thacker

Series: Stolen Brides #1

I’ve had this one for awhile but haven’t read it yet. She gets stolen the morning of her wedding. Her captor hopes to use her to barter for Scotland’s freedom. She has plans of her own though.

Oh no is Malcolm her father? Actually I think I would like that. Yep ok I’m on board with this. Her true father is Malcom.

Woah! What!? I didn’t see that coming. Fiona is preventing his wife from coming back. Um how does that help her though. If she comes back he can divorce her and marry someone else, right?

I liked this one, obviously since I finished it in a day. We got closure with the first wife that wasn’t really his wife, got rid of the scheming Fiona and found a way to live happily ever after.

Highland Vixen

Date read: March 20, 2021 – March 21, 2021

Author: Mary Wine

Series: Highland Weddings #2

Marcus is a fierce highland war chief and thinks one day he’ll settle down with an obedient wife. Helen is anything but obedient.

I thought they were taking the English girl with them, but it doesn’t seem like she’s with them. I’m confused.

Aww. Brenda. I can’t handle what you’re going through. You need a happily ever after. You’ve been through too much.

I mean I kinda despised Duana. She was a bitch, but I didn’t really want to see her killed. Also, Helen is about to be kidnapped. I wonder how they will get her out without being seen.

No Janet don’t do that. That is the worst thing you could do. Don’t take your niece to court. The Earl dude is evil and has it out for your family. This is a bad plan.

Oh Brenda. I’m crying for what you’ve been through. I hope you survive but don’t have to go through any more hardships.

And all ends happily for now. I know it won’t stay that way. Some of the switches in perspective, location, time and people threw me off for a bit but I got in the rhythm after a bit. This was still pretty good.

Captured by a Laird

Date read: January 2, 2021 – January 4, 2021

Author: Margaret Mallory

Series: The Douglas Legacy #1

This is the first of the Douglas sisters. She was married at thirteen to a horrible man who tried to break her. Now that he’s dead she was hoping to enjoy widowhood. Until Laird of Wedderburn storms her gates and she once again finds herself wed to a man she doesn’t know or want.

Dude if you tell me one more time that girls fall over you and when you had to start working for it you dropped them I’m gonna scream. He’s so damn arrogant about it.

Wow. Well your ten year old brother just told you. Will called him on not understanding women. Lol.

Oh god Alison! This is a terrible idea. Do not leave your children with a stranger. You already made a huge mistake by leaving the castle.

Why doesn’t he tell her the truth? That he was protecting Will. She’d understand and stand by him if he did.

This was good. I didn’t like that they never seemed to talk to each other. The book would be less than half as long if they actually communicated properly. It kept moving pretty well and had drama and violence and love. Lol I’m not sure what else to say about it. It was a good break from the contemporary stuff I’ve been reading lately.

The Wedding

Date read: September 20, 2020 – September 22, 2020

Author: Julie Garwood

Series: Lairds’ Fiancées #2

I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump. I think it’s because I’ve been working a lot and my brain is just tired when I’m done. So, going to the second book in the Lairds fiancés series. In this one our girl has been ordered to wed a Scottish Laird. Only she gets kidnapped on the way to her intended. Her intended has a sworn enemy who she actually proposed to when she was a kid. I’m confused about this description.

This dude is crazy. I’m fuming but I can’t die until I know my ten year old son will carry on my hatred for pretty much everyone because I just listed like six clans that I speculate could somehow be involved in my death. Um dude you need to chill.

I love children. Brenna, who I’m guessing is like ten ish maybe six or so, just curtsied and fell on her butt for the company and has declared she’s going to marry him.

Ok some timeline since we seem to be skipping years a lot here. 1103 Conner is ten and goes to live and train with Alec. 1108 Conner and Brenna meet and she decides she’s going to marry him. Now we are at 1119 in Scotland.

So apparently Brenna proposed to Conner three times. Also, I thought her sister was supposed to marry McNare. Why does Conner think that Brenna’s on her way to be wed?

I didn’t realize you cared. I don’t. Then why did you defend me? Because if anyone is going to kill you it’s gonna be me. Lol. Well she’s got that in common with Jaime. She threatened to kill Alec at least once.

Well yeah I kinda feared that would be the case when they said something was left at the border. MacNare killed her horse and sent it as a warning.

Well that’s a bit dramatic. If I fall in love with her then she’ll die.

His step mom is going to be the one behind the death of his father and Raen will be in on whatever her plot is now. I think she wants to be mistress again.

If you insist on killing your self do so on Crispin’s watch not mine. Lol. Yeah cuz Conner would kill you.

I HATE his stepmother. She’s a terrible human being. Can we kill her?

What a bitch. Brenna is lady McAlister you narcissistic witch that I hazard to even call human!

This vile woman. Grr. Conner I need you back at the keep right now to gut her or I’ll do it.

Good grief the end of that book had me going. We did kill the bitch so that’s good, but he upset Brenna again. They made up though and he proved he knew her family. He was even civil to her brother, well he didn’t kill him. Also, Quinlin gets a look at Faith and has decided to marry her. I’m sure that will go very well. Anyway. I enjoyed this book.

The Hellion and the Highlander

Date read: August 8, 2020 – August 14, 2020

Author: Lynsay Sands

Series: Devil of the Highlands #3

So, I’m back to going to the pool now that I’m COVID free. My phone over heats and it’s hard to read on it in the sun anyway. I’ll finish submitting to the lawyer when I’m back inside but for now I’ll start this one. So, we’ve got Kade finding love. Averill is tired of her father husband hunting for her and having men turn her down. Kade is just back from war and while he finds her attractive couldn’t subject her to life in the highlands. That is until she braves unexpected danger to be by his side.

Oh that’s awesome! She “greased” her hand to give him a hand job with numbing ointment. I’m dying right now.

So, I think I liked the first two better. I still enjoyed this one but the first two held my attention better. I’m glad Ian was alright and that Brodie died. I wonder though if Morag told him that Brodie intended to rape and kill his wife since she held that part of the story back. I don’t know it was alright but the first two were better.
